The National Institutes of Health estimates that up to 80 percent of adult Americans have periodontal (gum) disease. Periodontal disease often begins as gingivitis; symptoms include red swollen and sensitive gums that bleed easily. Gingivitis is caused by the build up of harmful bacteria, also known as plaque and tartar. If left untreated, gingivitis can become periodontitis which requires specialized dental attention.
